How We Make Espadrilles by Hand

The Art of Espadrille Making

There are no shortcuts here. Every pair takes hours.
Every stitch is placed by a human hand.

Step 1

The Jute

We source jute rope from Bangladesh's finest jute districts. Natural, unbleached, biodegradable. The same jute that built this country's economy for 200 years.

Step 2

The Sole

The rope is coiled into the shape of a foot — by hand, without a machine. Each coil is stitched to the next with waxed linen thread. This takes 2–3 hours per sole.

Step 3

The Stitch

The blanket stitch. The most important skill in espadrille-making. Each stitch is placed 8–10mm apart, pulled firm, and tied off inside the sole where no one sees it.

Step 4

The Upper

Canvas — natural, breathable, pre-washed — is cut to pattern, interfaced, and sewn. Then attached to the sole with the same hand stitch that craftsmen in Barcelona have used for 90 years.

Step 5

The Pair

24 hours of pressure. The rubber outsole bonds permanently. We check every stitch, every edge, every measurement. Then it ships to you.
